Moret-sur-Loing

I went walkabout with the camera:
Goslings

The old ford alongside the old bridge

The postern gate at the ford

The main gate at the bridge

The town square

A plaque telling us that Napoleon Bonapart slept here on the 19th March 1815 after he escaped from Elba.  It was his last stop before entering Paris

In February 1814 the Austro-Prussian army were marching on Paris and this town was besieged.  The French troops destroyed the bridge and the siege was lifted.

The facade of a grand house from the 16th century

Inside the Cathedral.  The apse dates from the 13th Century.

The organ loft dates from the 15th century and the organ itself from the early 16th century.  It fell into disuse in the 19th century but after 10 years of restoration it began to play again in 2002

13th century baptismal font

The choir dates from the 15th century.

The left side of the choir was walled up in 1697 when the 15th century bell tower above it threatened to collapse.

Back at the river bank, a marker of flood levels over the centuries. June 2016 is the fourth highest mark, 3.8m above normal

Old flood level marks from 1770 and 1802

A staircase through the town wall to the river, used by the tanners

There were a number of water mills across the river

The Loing River
Today was VE Day (Victory in Europe) and there was a parade down the main road and a memorial service in the town square. Thanks to Shaun for these pics because I did not have my camera with me.
