14 km 6 locks
Nice sunny weather after yesterday’s rain. Ian cycled to Bataville to get some fresh
bread at the boulangerie there.
Bataville is where the factory making Bata shoes started up many years
ago. Then we took the short trip to
Lagarde, mostly to get an internet signal to check emails, also to do 2 loads
of laundry (there is a washing machine and dryer there), and last but not least,
just for a change of scenery.
There were a couple of charter boats out today, behaving
themselves very well so no fun and games. By 4 in the afternoon we were back in Port
Saint Marie and I went with Joy and Colin, who have a car here, to a large
E.Leclerc hypermarket in Sarrebourg. We
haven’t seen even a tiny epicerie (small grocery store) for many days and
stocks were running low. I bought loads
of fresh veg, enough to share with Lynn.
I was down to half a packet of beans and half a butternut (bought in Diksmuide
in March – the butternut not the beans).
It was after 6 by the time we got back, only just enough time to make
dinner before Lynn and Shaun arrived soon after 7. We knew they would be tired after the long
flight trip from Durban, (with 96kg of luggage!) and would want an early night
so I made a delicious (even if I say so myself) spaghetti for us all.
It was great to see them again. We last saw them in Tournai in May last year
and unfortunately we’ll only spend one day together before they set off for
Strasbourg and we head back towards Diksmuide.
