22 kms, 3 locks |
Last night it was
hot, neither Ian or could sleep. At
7.00, when the bakery opened I went to buy a fresh baguette for lunch and we
were ready to go not long afterwards but the locks only start operating at 9.00
It was a
most enjoyable cruise today. The Meuse just
gets lovelier and lovelier.
It was just
a short stretch today, 22 km and 3 locks, and we tied up at the port de
plaisance in Montherme shortly after 12.30.
The markings on the pole at this shed at one of the locks mark the 2 highest water levels during floods in 1993 and 1995. The highest is more than 2m over the top of the lock! |
Every day we see more and more pleasure cruisers, this one we met in a particularly narrow part and they kept well to their side, as did we. |
The main point of the short day/early stop here is because there is a
washing machine in the Capitainerie (harbour master’s office) but when we
arrived we discovered it is closed from 11.30 to 14.30.
Note the camper vans alongside the canal behind the boats |
There is a
wonderful young lady in the Capitainerie, who speaks good English, is cheerful,
friendly and helpful. It cost €6.50/day
for the boat, €3.50 for the washing
machine (if I had wanted to use the dryer too it would have cost and extra €2)
and€1.50 each for the showers.
I opted not
to use the dryer because today was HOT, 32C!!!
This is not the weather we like to cruise in, we would much rather have
6C than 32C. There was no way I was
walking anywhere in that heat so looking around Montherme has been archived
until the next time we come this way.
Instead we read our books- dozed off a bit - and waited till it got cooler.
The salient
point about this marina is the number of camper vans parked here. 21 of them, cheek by jowl. All with their tables and chairs set out in
front of their vans, all steadfastly ignoring their neighbours. And they sat out in that blazing sun
getting more and more sunburnt – no sunblock, no hats. Nuts! That
sure doesn’t look like fun to me.
