We did move a bit today,
about 3 km. Ian wanted to sand the
primer he painted yesterday and then do the first coat of paint and thought it
might be frowned upon in the yacht club.
We moved to a "layby", an indentation in the canal, just to
the East of Ravels.
In fact, it is a lot closer
to the town and an easier bike ride.
From the yacht club we had to ride about 1 km on a rutted, uneven, dirt
road, then onto a cobbled section, then across a busy road onto the bicycle path. From this side of the canal we are straight
away onto a paved side road, and do not have to cross the road to the cycle
track.
Before we went off on the
bikes, Ian sanded the coach roof while I was driving down the canal, and then
painted as soon as we stopped. Just as
he was finishing a gust of wind blew a lot of seeds onto the fresh paint, plus
a few insects. So we now have non-slip
seeds and bugs! He was not happy.
I did a load of washing this
morning before we left the yacht club, making use of the free water.
We found this rather interesting
plaque, wish I could understand it better, but apparently there was an
electrified fence on the north bank of this canal during the First World War to
separate the neutral Netherlands form occupied Belgium. But the switch house was on the south side of
the canal at this spot with a cable stretched across the canal to the fence.
We had a proper barbecue
tonight: chicken, sausage, potatoes and salad. A visitor appeared when the meat
went on!
We'll go back to the yacht
club tomorrow.
You translated the electric cable sign perfectly. Still enjoying reading your blog! Marijke
