Paris: a picture blog

We went rambling late last night and caught a view of the
Eiffel Tower
This is the story of our day: walking, walking and more walking - with a map and a camera.
Heading for the Ile de la Cité, this was our first sight of the Notre Dame Cathedral

Wondering down the Ile St Louis - a shop window full of quirky teapots.  This one is specially for Fay.

A restaurant window with quirky cows.  This one is for Chrissie.

The Notre Dame Cathedral as we approached it down a side street.

One of the front portals.

Well, what can I say?

La fête de pain - bakers at work

Charlemagne

Palais de Justice with Sainte
Chapelle in the background

Mmm, I think this is called the Concierge, anyway it is part of the original palace on the Ile de la Cité.

The banks of the Seine are lined with these tiny stalls that sell books

This really go to me.  It is a memorial to 6 women who fought in the French Resistance movement and were made Companions of the Liberation.  This stone is in honour of a woman, Marie Hackin, who disappeared in 1941.

La Place des Vosges, overflowing with locals seeking the sun.

A statue of Louis XIII in the centre of the Place des Vosges, remade in 1829 to replace the original from 1639 which was destroyed in the French Revolution

The square is surrounded by these wonderful arcades, so cool on a hot sunny day.

Just a door - but not "just" a door.

From the sublime to the....sublime.

The Marais

Parking is at a premium!

Place Sainte Catherine

A well-disguised tearoom

Rue Saint Antoine is lined with magnificent town houses.  This one, Hotel de Sully, is one of the best

The opposite side of the coin! Today there was a demonstration against the Macron government in the Place de la Bastille, right next to the Arsenal Marina.  All the roads approaching the square were closed off by an intimidating ring of police.   They were fully kitted out in riot gear but were were very polite and friendly when I asked if it was safe to pass through.

There were also many, many police vehicles of many descriptioins. Lines  and lines of them.  Many were pulling trailers, some were obviously to incarcerate miscreants and there were even a few water cannon.

Lots of noise and a huge crowd of protesters.  Sorry, bad pic taken from very far away - I was not going to get close enough to get involved!

And some were already leaving.  The young firebrands stuck it out for a good many hours.

Ahhh, so much better than demonstration and revolution.
