Moret

More walking, more pictures - enjoy!
One of the remaining towers of the old town wall which surrounded the town.  The wall was some 1300m long with 20 equidistant towers.

Next to the bridge there was a stone lined ford across the water

A portal in the wall leads to the ford.

The ford sloping into the water and a walkway under the bridge

This plaque on the river bank shows the height of the river in flood.  The highest was in 1770 but 2016 was not much lower, the fourth mark from the top, about 3.8m higher than normal.

There were 4 portals through the walls to the river.  This one is at the Dungeon.

Another portal through the town wall.  Notice the worn steps.
The portals had strong doors that were closed at night.

The Bourgogne Gate

After escaping from Elba, Napoleon spent the night in this house on his way to Paris.

"Napoleon the First, on his return from the island Elba, passed the night of 19 to 20 March 1815 in this room"

During the battle against the Austro-Prussian army on 18th February 1814, this bullet struck the wall at the Samois Gate and has been lodged there ever since

The Samois Gate

I found the petanque terrain, and watched the locals at work
